This unit introduces students to the analysis of media texts with a view to achieving a better understanding of how they communicate with their audiences. It considers various media genres, including news genres, and examines the communication conventions that they employ. It introduces students to key theoretical concepts associated with the construction of meaning including semiotics, ideology, discourse and narrative.
1. Upon completion of this subject, students will have significantly enhanced media literacy and will be able to critically analyse and evaluate media texts in terms of their format, structure and stylistic characteristics.
2. They will also be able to appreciate the various ways in which texts operate to construct perceptions and understanding of the world.
