This unit explores the concept that curricula do not develop in a vacuum, but are affected by influences from socio-cultural, political, technological and economic change in both the local, national and global contexts. A multi-disciplinary approach, raising political, sociological, historical and ethical questions enables students to develop critical perspectives on key contemporary curriculum issues and to engage in an analysis of issues that will affect the curriculum of the future both broadly and in their particular professional contexts.

Learning Outcomes

In successfully completing the unit, the student will have:

1. articulated a critique of contemporary debates in curriculum;

2. applied analytic approaches to a curriculum issue in the education sector and/or key learning area of their choice;

3. engaged reflectively with the international curriculum literature, especially as it related to his/her own professional field of practice.
