Syllabus

This unit extends the concepts from Drug Formulation Science into advanced formulations and biological products. Compounding and manufacture of complex dosage forms will be introduced with a focus on non-oral routes of administration. This information will be used to demonstrate how the route of administration for a dosage form affects the rate and extent of drug disposition in the body. This unit will also introduce bioequivalence and its role in ensuring equipotent dosing amongst generic products.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. explain the features of advanced formulation design;

2. understand the concepts surrounding medicinal use of biologic products;

3. describe the principles of bioavailability and bioequivalence as applicable in modern pharmaceutical products.
