Syllabus

This unit introduces issues and practices in health care service delivery as they affect the health professional currently, and into the future. Focus will be on communication with patients, carers and health professionals, and how this is affected by the social determinants of health including ethnicity and culture. Increased understanding of the needs of the patient within the health care system will be developed with detailed consideration of aspects of communication and behavioural change as they affect patient outcomes. There will be a focus on intra and interdisciplinary communication, teamwork, leadership and scope of practice, with particular reference to the future and developing roles of health care professionals.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. understand the complexity of the health care system and how this affects patients and health professionals;

2. demonstrate effective communication techniques when interacting with patients and health professionals having a clear understanding of the varying requirements of each group;

3. identify various social determinants that effect patients, including culture and ethnicity, and demonstrate consideration of these when using behavioural change techniques;

4. understand the importance of communication, teamwork and the role of leadership when working within the health sector;

5. outline the scope of practice of various health professionals and how these may be varied as future health care needs are considered.
