    This unit will explore the limitations of project management and the most promising techniques to overcome project failure. It will start by reviewing case study research showing we have reached the limits of traditional project management practice. The theoretical base will be completed by exploring the finding that senior management have more impact on success than traditional approaches. Participants will be introduced to and learn to apply the most promising tools and techniques needed to govern projects. The topics reviewed will include strategy, organisational change, project sponsorship, programme management, performance measurement, culture and portfolio management. Relevant Australian and International Standards on IT/Project Governance and new industry methodologies around portfolio, programme and change management will be reviewed.

    This unit is co-taught with unit 8759 Systems Programme and Protfolio Management PG.

    Learning Outcomes

    On successful completion of the unit, students will be able to:

    1. Describe the limitations of current approaches;

    2. Explain why project governance, portfolio management, programme management and change management are more promising than the traditional approaches;

    3. Effectively evaluate future innovations to overcome project failure;

    4. Selectively apply the most promising tools / methodologies to support top management and overcome project failure; and

    5. Contribute to the body of literature.
