Syllabus
This unit is designed to develop generic and academic skills for students across all undergraduate degrees offered by the School of Accounting and Information Systems, the School of Management and the School of Government and Policy in the Faculty of Business, Government & Law, as well as the Bachelor of Sports Management in the Faculty of Health. Fifty per cent of the unit syllabus is introductory statistics which will both support the economics and accounting units, as well as develop students ability to interpret statistical research in all business, government and social science units. The other fifty per cent of the unit syllabus provides support for professional development and the development of critical thinking skills.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Prepare a professional e - portfolio (Mahara). This will include skills that: Apply critical thinking tools and techniques to undertake an analysis of the nature of the profession past, present and future; Identify and appraise their own learning needs in terms of current skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to be developed to be successful in their chosen profession; On the basis of the above analytical/diagnostic work, create and develop a personal five-year plan (Mahara) that identifies where they would like to be in five years; what they need to do in that time, both at UC and more broadly, to develop and acquire the necessary skills, knowledge and attitudes; Employ Mahara e - portfolio to chart their skills development over the unit, course of the degree and beyond;
2. Explain basic statistical terminology in published material and express a problem in statistical terms;
3. Summarise simple data graphically and statistically either manually or by a computer package; and
4. Understand simple probability calculations.

Prerequisites
Restrictions: This unit is not open to students who have passed 5123 Business Statistics. Completion of unit 5123 may substitute for completion of this unit in certain courses and majors/minors. Please contact your course convener for further information.

Basic mathematics, approx to Year-10 High School standard.
