    Syllabus

    Students will work in a conservation workshop usually within a museum. They will be working under the supervision of a qualified conservator. Working on live projects and structured exercises, they will analyse conservation problems using a risk assessment model. Students will identify and apply informed conservation choices based on a condition analysis. Under supervision they will then apply suitable and effective solutions.The work will be recorded using recognised conservation techniques and students will work closely with the institution to follow guidelines and correct practice as detailed by the practicum host. Student will be directed to choose a different specialism for each practicum unit to broaden their knowledge of conservation.

    Learning Outcomes

    DESCRIPTION:

    1 - demonstrate through practical exercises an understanding of repair and stabilisation of cultural heritage material;

    2 - analyse conservation problems using a risk assessment model;

    3 - make informed conservation choices based on a condition analysis;

    4- apply suitable and effective solutions;

    5 - record through suitable media the condition and treatment of artefacts;

    6 - work safely and apply correct OH&S procedure; and

    7. follow guideline and correct practice as detailed by the practicum host.

    Contact Hours

    10 hours / week for 13 weeks or equivalent by negotiation.

    Prerequisites

    Chemistry 1a and Chemistry 1b.
