Syllabus
This unit examines the history and development of Japanese architecture and gardens from ancient times to the 21st century. It examines the elements, principles and theories of sacred and secular building typologies, and the development of gardens as a setting for architecture. Students will investigate the indigenous and imported sources and themes of selected Japanese buildings and gardens, and the reciprocal influence of Japan on the architecture and garden design of other countries. Assessment will include a research paper on an agreed aspect of Japanese architecture and/or garden design, and the preparation and delivery of a tutorial on a selected Japanese building and/or garden.
