|Level:||Level 4 - Undergraduate Advanced Unit|
|Faculty:||Faculty of Science and Technology|
|Discipline:||Academic Program Area - Technology|
Material covered in lectures and tutorials includes the following topics (practical sessions will deal with atmospheric optics):
- Optical digital transmission systems;
- Analog systems;
- WDM concept and components;
- Optical Amplifiers; and
- Optical Networks.
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Apply their knowledge to the design of optical communications systems and subsystems; and
2. Gain some experience with computer simulation of optical communication systems and subsystems and with optical communications hardware.
3 hours lectures and 1 hour tutorial per week; plus 3 hour laboratory work (6 weeks).
