Syllabus
In a time of ongoing violent conflicts around the globe, this unit looks at the nature and origins of conflict and war in its many forms, as well as possible avenues for conflict resolution and the construction of lasting peace. The unit will explore key theories and debates concerning the fundamental origins of violent conflict, the evolving nature of warfare across human history, and major approaches to conflict resolution and peacebuilding. Discussions of key theories and concepts will be illustrated using contemporary real world examples.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit students, will be able to:
1. demonstrate an understanding of the key theories and debates concerning the origins of violence and conflict;
2. explain the major approaches to ending violent conflict and building a lasting peace;
3. critically analyse the debates surrounding contemporary conflicts.
