Syllabus
This unit introduces students to the analysis of media texts with a view to achieving a better understanding of how they communicate with their audiences. It considers various media genres, including news genres, and examines the communication conventions that they employ. It introduces students to key theoretical concepts associated with the construction of meaning including semiotics, ideology, discourse and narrative.
Learning Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:
1. demonstrate an understanding of how media texts construct, represent and signify a variety of meanings and discourses;
2. analyse and evaluate media texts from a range of theoretical perspectives;
3. argue the relative merits of theoretical perspectives on particular media texts and categories;
4. developed their critical thinking, written and oral communication skills
