Collections, large or small, require techniques of control, management, recording and maintenance. This unit is concerned with the main modes of collection management in museums and heritage places. Management is required from the moment an object is identified for acquisition, along the chain of possession into the collection, allowing for valuation, condition reporting, conservation, storage, exhibition, access, loans, transport and deaccession. A case study approach is used.
1. Understand the key issues associated with collection management systems
2. Understand the preventative conservation actions required by collections
