Syllabus
This unit explores the interrelation between language and cultures and the role of language in communication across cultural boundaries. It draws on the discipline of sociolinguistics and on intercultural communication studies, and explains associated research approaches. Main concerns are: language and language behaviour as a reflection of cultures and subcultures; language as bridge or barrier in the global environment; issues in multilingual societies and linguistic imperialism. This unit will be taught in combined teaching with Language, Cultures and Communication G (8076).
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1. Describe the complex link between culture/subculture and language use.
2. Explain the link between social and cultural attitudes and language behaviour;
3. Explain the role of language and its implications in globalisation;
4. Test and analyse issues related to language use and attitudes.
