Syllabus
This subject sequentially develops a student's understanding of the theory and content of the law. The Concept of Law; The Civil Law and the Common Law Traditions; The Australian Federation; Comparative Constitutional Structures - a Brief Introduction; Sources of Law in the Australian Federation; Reception of English Law in Australia; The Law in Australia Today; The Legal Profession and the Practice of Law in Australia and Critical Perspectives on the Law.
Learning Outcomes
DESCRIPTION:
1. Demonstrate a broad knowledge and understanding of the historical foundation of the Australian legal system and sources of law within it
2. Locate and analyse primary sources of law
3. Locate and analyse secondary sources and use them to develop ideas and arguments about legal issues
4. Demonstrate an understanding of how Australian legal institutions work both separately and collaboratively
5. Demonstrate an awareness of how the legal system operates in Australian social contexts
