Possible changes to your unit's learning activities and assessment items

For the remainder of 2020, resulting from Australian Government's directives requiring physical distancing and restrictions on movement because of the COVID-19 pandemic, any exams that are required for assessment in a unit will be online exams. Online exams may also use online proctoring to help assure the academic integrity of those exams. Please contact your unit convener with any questions.

While the University has made efforts to ensure that Unit Outlines reflect a unit’s learning activities and assessment items, any changes to Australian Government directives because of the COVID-19 pandemic may require changes to these during the semester to ensure the safety and well being of students and staff. These changes will not be updated in the published unit outline, but will be communicated to you via your unit’s UCLearn(Canvas) teaching site. Any changes made will continue to meet the unit’s learning outcomes, as described in the Unit Outline.

Syllabus

This single subject provides the core of the Research Honours in Applied Science course. Successful completion of a research project and submission of a well written thesis is the main outcome of the subject. Students will meet regularly with their supervisor(s); attend lectures and tutorials on scientific method, ethics and philosophy of science; study approaches to preparing research proposals; define or locate a problem, topic or theme, and decide on research methods to be used; accumulate relevant data and prepare a literature review; analyse information obtained and arrive at conclusions in the light of information or material analysed.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit, students will be able to:

1. Learn to conceive, plan and carry to completion a discrete piece of original research, in close association with a professional scientist in the field;

2. Critically evaluate information from a range of sources, testing it for consistency with existing frameworks of understanding, to frame research questions in their field of study and to organise and conduct a critical literature review and to apply an holistic approach to problem solving;

3. Develop the ability to work independently, taking responsibility for substantial elements of the planning and implementation of an original piece of research and to take a leading role in exploring the implications of that research for the particular field of endeavour and in a broader context;

4. Develop an ability to express professional knowledge, understanding, ideas, argument and opinions with confidence and clarity; in both spoken and written form, with the effective use of communication aids;

5. Develop interpersonal and self-organisational skills including the ability to work within a research group and manage time, goals and priorities;

6. Develop a knowledge of, and commitment to, the principles of scientific ethics and a professional attitude to their work, being independent and objective in their research and in giving professional advice.
