Syllabus

This unit provides students with an understanding of English Grammar. The unit covers the grammatical properties of word classes, phrases, and clauses, and introduces the main sentence structures in English. Each area of grammar is discussed in the context of form, meaning and grammatical function.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. Describe the structures of English sentences;

2. Identify word classes and phrases in English sentences;

3. Explain word classes, phrases, and clause types according to their form, meaning and grammatical functions; and

4. Explain the use of grammar in authentic texts.
