This is a practice education unit that builds upon professional practice skills developed during the program. This unit gives opportunity to practice, under minimal supervision, authentic occupational therapy assessments, interventions and evaluations. The placement may be in traditional or non-traditional areas of practice. This is the second practice education unit that aims to enable students to demonstrate application of knowledge and translation of theory to practice. This unit forms part of the 1000 hours of practice education mandated by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists and is guided by the Australian Minimum Competency Standards for New Graduate Occupational Therapists (Occupational Therapy Australia 2010).
Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Undertake, with minimal supervision, an occupation-focused assessment demonstrating the appropriate cognitive, technical and creative skills required to organise and manage an occupation-focussed program or intervention;
2. Evaluate, with minimal supervision, an occupation-focussed program demonstrating the appropriate cognitive, technical and creative skills required; and
3. Apply, with minimal supervision, the theory and concepts of occupational science and occupational therapy to a specific practice area.
