This is a practice education unit comprising 9 weeks of industry-based placement. In this unit students are required to attend the placement site for approximately 7.5 - 8 hours per day. This unit gives the opportunity to practise, under supervision, authentic occupational therapy assessments, interventions and evaluations. The placement may be in traditional or non-traditional areas of practice. This practice education unit builds upon the previous blocks of placement in first, second and third year and aims to enable students to demonstrate application of knowledge and translation of theory to practice. This unit forms part of the 1000 hours of practice education mandated by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists and is guided by the Australian Minimum Competency Standards for New Graduate Occupational Therapists (Occupational Therapy Australia 2010).
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Independently undertake an occupation-focused assessment demonstrating the appropriate cognitive, technical and creative skills required to organise and manage an occupation-focussed program;
2. Evaluate, under minimal supervision, an occupation-focussed program demonstrating the appropriate cognitive, technical and creative skills required; and
3. Apply, under minimal supervision, the theory and concepts of occupational science and occupational therapy to a specific practice area.
Total of up to 330 practice education hours plus up to 10 hours in pre/post placement workshops
Must have passed Humans as Occupational Beings 2, 10311.
Must be enrolled in the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy, 373JA.
