Syllabus

This is a practice education unit comprising 4 weeks of industry-based placement. In this unit students are required to attend the placement site for approximately 7.5 - 8 hours per day for 4 weeks. This unit gives the opportunity to practise, under supervision, authentic occupational therapy assessments, interventions and evaluations. The placement may be in traditional or non-traditional areas of practice. This is the second practice education unit that aims to enable students to demonstrate application of knowledge and translation of theory to practice. This unit forms part of the 1000 hours of practice education mandated by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists and is guided by the Australian Minimum Competency Standards for New Graduate Occupational Therapists (Occupational Therapy Australia 2010).

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. Undertake, under moderate supervision, an occupation-focused assessment demonstrating the appropriate cognitive, technical and creative skills required to organise and manage an occupation-focussed program;

2. Evaluate, under moderate supervision, an occupation-focussed program demonstrating the appropriate cognitive, technical and creative skills required; and

3. Apply, under significant supervision, the theory and concepts of occupational science and occupational therapy to a specific practice area.

Prerequisites

Must have completed Occupational Therapy Professional Practice 1a, 10304.

Corequisites

Must be enrolled in the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy, 373JA.
