Syllabus

Knowing and recognising self is essential in the development of caring collaborations that are therapeutic. Focusing on 'knowing self', this unit considers self-awareness and evaluation to achieve therapeutic alliances in health care. This unit is foundational in developing personal responsibility, accountability and capability in order to control personal learning and practice as a healthcare practitioner. Students will be introduced to reflection as an essential practice for achieving personal and professional insights. The unit will examine the spectrum of intrapersonal and interpersonal social contexts in health care practice.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. Explain the importance of self-awareness in the context of nursing identity;

2.Examine and discuss self in the context of human diversity;

3. Recognise and use communication that is culturally sensitive and culturally safe;

4. Identify therapeutic communication skills for engaging with people;

5. Critically reflect on existing personal perceptions and values relating to Indigenous people (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) and;

6. Critically reflect on existing personal perceptions and values relating to those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

3 hours per week, consisting of 2 hour Interactive workshops and 1 hour online pre-workshop activities.

None.

Corequisites

Must be enrolled in 364JA Bachelor of Nursing or 365JA Bachelor of Nursing Advanced AND 10203 Integrating Nursing Concepts 1 OR 9045 Learning for Professional Practice 1.
