Introduction:

The Breadth Major in Literary Studies will provide students with a training in the close reading of novels, poems, picture books, scripts and films. As well as exploring the close-up details of how artists elicit emotional and intellectual engagement from their readers and audiences, the major will provide students with a set of theoretical frameworks in which to understand the historical emergence and ongoing development of contemporary forms of narrative art. This will include the opportunity to engage with international and/or cross-cultural literature. The Literary Studies Breadth Major will be particularly useful for Bachelor of Arts (Creative Writing) students who want to take a major that deepens their engagement with the written word, as well as to Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Communication students more generally. Due to the generic appeal of literature and the related arts, and the broad applicability of study in the field, the Breadth Major will also have value for students in other faculties.
