How do I calculate my tuition fees as an international student?

If you are an international student, your tuition fees will depend on three things:

  • the EFTSL (Equivalent Full Time Study Load) value of your unit/s;
  • the year in which you commenced your course; and
  • the course in which you are enrolled.

You will firstly need to find out the annual rate of your course using the Fee Schedule. You need to ensure that you select the correct year when referencing the fee schedules as this will affect the fee amount (select the year you commenced/will commence your course).

You will also need to determine the EFTSL value of your unit/s. The credit point value of your unit/s will indicate the EFTSL value as outlined in the table below (you can find out the credit point value of your unit on the Courses and Units Database – refer to Unit Details for more information):

Credit Points

EFTSL Value

3 credit points

0.125

6 credit points

0.250

9 credit points

0.375

12 credit points

0.500

Once you have found the EFTSL value of each of your units, along with the annual rate of your course, each unit cost can be calculated using the following formula:

(EFTSL value) x (annual fee rate) = cost per unit

Once you have determined the cost of each unit, you can then add the cost of your units together to calculate the total cost per teaching period.

In addition to your tuition fees, you are also required to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF)

EXAMPLE

Carlos is studying a Master of Business Administration and will commence in 2018. Looking at the course requirements, Carlos has found that he needs to enrol in the following units:

  • Advanced Legal Research & Writing PG
  • Property Law G
  • Masters of Laws Dissertation

After Carlos found out the credit point value of each of his units, he was able to convert each of his units to an EFTSL value:

Unit Name

Unit Code

Credit Points

EFTSL

Marketing G

6261

0.125

Economics and Policy G

9790

0.125

Institutions of Law and Government G

9582

0.125

Public Policy PG

0.125

Carlos knows (from looking at the fee schedule) that the annual tuition fee rate for the Master of Business Administration (for students commencing in 2018) is $33,100. Using this information, Carlos can now calculate the cost of each of his units:

Unit Name

EFTSL

Formula

Cost of Unit

Marketing G

0.125

$33,100 x 0.125 =

$4,137.50

Economics and Policy G

0.125

$33,100 x 0.125 =

$4,137.50

Institutions of Law and Government G

0.125

$33,100 x 0.125 =

$4,137.50

Public Policy PG

0.125

$33,100 x 0.125 =

$4,137.50

Total cost of Carlos' tuition fees for one teaching period

$16,550
