Traditionally, an ‘outer rode’ or “shiromuku” is worn for important or formal ceremonies, such as weddings.

This type of garment is invariably rich in texture, colour and design, incorporating elaborate embroidery, which has been dyed to suit the robe, beading, and utilizes either silk or satin or a combination of both as the foundation piece.

Lined with more silk and discreetly padded inserts, these lavish and at times, weighty regalia also incorporate auspicious motifs specific to the wearer.

The subject artwork was donated to the Collection in 2000 by ###.

Embroidered with silver and gold thread, the design features a red-crowned crane (also known as the Machurian or Japanese crane), and symbolizes luck, fidelity and longevity.
