1. This statute may be cited as the University of Canberra (Statutes Interpretation) Statute 2010.
2. The University Statutes Interpretation Statute 1991 is repealed.
3. This statute commences on the date of notification.
4. In this statute, unless the contrary intention appears:
"University Statute" has the same meaning as in Part 4 of the University of Canberra Act 1989 (ACT).
Application of Acts Interpretation Act
5. Nothing in this statute prejudices or affects the application of the Legislation Act 2001 (ACT) to the statutes and rules of the University.

(1) Unless the contrary intention appears, an expression used in rules made under a statute is, where the same expression is used in the statute, to have the same meaning as in the statute.
(2) This statute applies to rules made under statutes in the same way as it applies to statutes.

(1) In any Statute, unless the contrary intention appears:
"academic staff" means such of the staff of the University as are, by letter of appointment, appointed by the University as academic staff and includes such persons appointed by the University as professors, associate professors, senior lecturers, lecturers, and associate lecturers;
"rules" means rules made under a Statute;
"Secretary of Council"] means the person appointed under subsection 7(3);
"student" means a person (including a member of staff employed by the University) who is:
(a) undertaking any course for higher education provided by the University, including:
(i) any course leading to the award of a degree, diploma or certificate of the University; and
(ii) a unit forming part of such a course; and
(iii) any other course not leading to the award of a degree, diploma or certificate of the University; and
(b) enrolled as a student of the University;
"University Act" means the University of Canberra Act 1989.
(2) For the purposes of the University Act, persons who are academic staff within the meaning of the definition of academic staff in subsection (1) are regarded as members of the academic staff because of this statute.
(3) The Vice-Chancellor may appoint an officer of the University to be the Secretary of Council.
Reference to authorities, officers and offices
8. In a statute, unless the contrary intention appears, a reference to an authority, officer or office by designation is, if there is an authority, officer of office of that designation in or of the University, to be read as a reference to that authority, officer or office.
Citation of statutes and rules
9.
(1) In a statute, rule or other instrument of the University, a statute may be cited in any manner permitted by the statute.
(2) In a statute, rule or other instrument of the University, rules made under a statute may be cited in any manner permitted by the rules.
Notification and commencement of rules
10.
(1) Where rules are made under a Statute, the Secretary of Council must cause the rules to be communicated and made available to the University in a manner to be determined by the Secretary of Council.
(2) Rules made under a Statute come into operation on the day specified in those rules.
The foregoing Statute is made by Council under section 40 of the University of Canberra Act 1989 (ACT). The Statute was approved by Council at meeting No. 130 on 6 November 2009.
