Ethics
Welcome to Research Ethics at the University of Canberra. This page provides information for staff and students who intend doing research at UC that involve either animal or human participants.
All research involving human participants conducted at the University of Canberra must be conducted in accordance with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research.
The ACT Animal Welfare Act (1992) and the Code of Practice for the Care and use of Animals for Scientific Purposes stipulate that approval must be obtained from the institutional Animal Ethics Committee before animals are used for research or teaching. This legislation was introduced to protect the welfare of animals, by ensuring that their use in research and teaching is always humane, considerate, responsible and justified.
You will need to seek approval from either
- the Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) or
- the Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC)
prior to commencing your research. Funds attracted from successful grants, which involve ethics, will not be release until ethics approval has been granted.
