Online response to University of Canberra's course offer
|
Congratulations on being offered a course place
here at the University of Canberra!
As a potential student, you need to be aware that the University of Canberra
views seriously any unauthorised access to your personal information. To
ensure confidentiality over the Internet, the University implements a
mechanism which provides a secure communication connection from the
University back to your browser.
If your browser is already configured to recognise an encrypted
connection to the secure University of Canberra servers,
with the University of Canberra
to handle your course offer.
If, however, this is your first visit to our secure University of
Canberra service, please read the following information regarding secure
communication with the University.
The description may appear complicated at first glance but it really
isn't. We have attempted to supply you with sufficient information so that
you are well informed regarding the issues of using the Internet for
communication with the University.
On a more practical note, you will find that it is really quite simple
to configure your browser for secure communication with the University
(you only need to click one of the links below).

Communicating with the University over the Internet
|
The University recognises that there is some concern by the public in
using the Internet to send personal information and/or to make online
credit card payments. To counter this concern, the University runs a
number of special Web servers which ensure that all messages sent over the
Internet between the end user and the server are encrypted ie we use the
same type of technology employed by major banks and the military. This
method of sending messages is used for activities such as credit card
payments and for processing personal information. Employing this technique
ensures that confidential information cannot be viewed during transit but it
requires, however, that both the server and the browser participate in the
encryption process.
This page will help you to configure your browser for encrypted
transmission and, when successfully completed, will then allow you access
to the University of Canberra pages to accept an offer of place, check
your personal records etc in a secure manner.

Obtaining a University Security Authority Certificate
|
To enable a secure encrypted communication path, you will need to
ensure that your browser recognises, and accepts, the University of
Canberra's Security Certificates. Without such a certificate, you won't
even be able to connect to our secure Web servers.
The University has a Certificate Authority Server which can issue
electronic certificates to browsers (Netscape version 2 and higher or
Explorer version 3 and higher, versions 4 and higher recommended) to allow
encrypted communication between the browser and secure University network
servers. To obtain such a University Authority Certificate you will need
to be issued with one that was created by the University's Certificate
Authority server and it then needs to be downloaded to your browser.
Although some browser versions, will recognise a new Certificate Authority
automatically, we recommend that you explicitly request the certificate.
and, when prompted by your browser,
accept the Certificate Authority as valid for all options presented
(you will only need to do this once for any particular browser).

Secure Communication with the University
|
After you have configured your browser to recognise the University's
certificate as described above,
with the University of Canberra
to action the University's course offer.
