Secure Access to UC WWW information

Obtaining a University Authority Certificate

The University of Canberra has a Certificate Authority Server which can issue electronic certificates to browsers (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) to allow encrypted communication between the browser and a secure UC network server (eg. Web access). To obtain a University Authority Certificate you need to download it from the network.

Although some browser versions, will recognise a new Certificate Authority automatically, we recommend that you explicitly request the certificate.

Download the certificate

and, when prompted by your browser, accept the Certificate Authority as valid for all options presented (you will only need to do this once for any particular browser).

In Internet Explorer 7:
Left Click Download, Select Open.
Install Certificate, Place the certificate in the following store: ‘Trusted Root Certification Authorities'
Finish Import, then restart Internet Explorer.

Obtaining a UC Network Password (staff ONLY)

To gain access to password protected network services (eg. Web access off-campus, Web access to Calendar) you need a LDAP style UC Network Password.  If you don't have one please click here to get a Network Password issued to you.   If you cannot remember an already issued UC Network Password, please contact the Computer Centre Helpdesk on ext 5500 to request a new one.  Please note that you will usually be using this password in combination with your staff ID (Payroll number) as the usercode. You should change your password, as soon as you receive it, to something that is secure and that you can remember. Please click here to change your UC password. Since password changes use the protected network services, please ensure that you have obtained a University Authority Certificate, prior to changing your password - see above.

Obtaining a UC student password (students ONLY)

To gain access to most password protected network services (eg. computer labs, e-mail, access to printer account) you need a UC student password.  You can obtain a student password from the Computer Centre Helpdesk (Building 10) or from the Library Information Desk (Building 8).    You will usually be using this password in combination with your student ID with a "u" prefix as the usercode eg. u123456 if your ID number is 123456.  Please note that the usercode and password are case sensitive and the "u" is always in lower case.  See the Student Network Services usernote for more information.
