The International Film Festival was first organised by the Convocation of the University of Canberra, Australia.
The inaugural Festival was held in Canberra, the Australian capital, from 11 to 13 October 1996. The venue for the Festival was the Electric Shadows Cinema complex. The inaugural Australian International Film Festival - Canberra, Australia is widely regarded as a highly successful event.
The Second Canberra International Film Festival was held in September 1997 with increased patronage and a greater range of films shown making this second festival even more successful than the first. The third film festival was held in September 1998 and the 4th in September 1999 and the event is now known as the Canberra International Film Festival.
A new Film Festival page is now available.
The Festival's purpose is to promote film culture and filmmakers, and support multiculturism by screening the best international and local films from as wide a variety of ethnic, cultural and racial backgrounds as possible.
The festival has grown to become one of Canberra's premier events. The Festival especially welcomes entries from independent filmmakers, and first time directors, as well as films from known filmmakers and distributors.
The film festival operation has now been handed on the Division of Communication and Education -Creative Communication and Cultural Studies at UC by the Convocation Committee. The sponsorship cheque handover ceremony of January 1999 is featured below:

The handover ceremony is featuring the immediate past Chair of Convocation Mrs Pat Cooper handing over the Convocation sponsorship cheque to Professor Peter Putnis.
