Hitting the ground running
Starting to teach and research at UC
The following three sessions support new academic staff commencing at the University of Canberra (UC) in 2012. The program is also available to staff who arrived in semester 2, 2011. The sessions are being offered at the beginning of semester 1, 2012, in the week before Orientation Week. The basic structure of the program is outlined below but the final details, including presenters, the times and dates of sessions, may vary slightly.

Drop-in session: Staff unable to attend sessions above are invited to come along to a drop-in session in the Teaching and Learning Centre (1C34) on Wednesday 8 February February at any time between 12.30pm and 2.00pm. TLC taff will be available to discuss material from the three sessions and also respond to individual inquiries.
Session 1: Preparation for teaching

This session provides an orientation to learning and teaching at UC and the following questions will be addressed: • What are the characteristics of effective teaching at UC?

Session 2: Support for teaching
| Focus |
In this Q&A session five presenters will each speak for ten minutes on areas of learning and teaching support within UC that are of particular relevance for academic staff commencing at UC in 2011 and there will be a general Q&A forum after the panelists have spoken. At the end of the forum Audio/Visual Staff will present a demonstration on using the console systems in lecture theatres.

Session 3: Developing your research through the Early Career Academic Program (ECAP)

Integrating teaching, research and career, as well as joining a community of Teaching and Research Scholars, are important considerations. This session will introduce the Early Career Academic Program (ECAP) and its tailored ECA Development Program. It will also introduce you to the key personnel and places you need to know to function as an ECA at UC. This session is for both existing and new-in-2012 early career academics. Questions that will be addressed in this session include:
