Course Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (GCHE) is a formally accredited course offered by the University of Canberra (UC). The GCHE is offered by the Centre for the Enhancement of Learning, Teaching and Scholarship (CELTS), on behalf of the Division of Communication and Education. Formal university enrolment is required and the form can be accessed by clicking here.  The Course consists of 12 credit points made up of one required 3 credit point unit and three 3 credit point electives. It is designed to be completed by part-time study over one or two years.

The Graduate Certificate in Higher Education offers staff involved in post-secondary education the opportunity to pursue the scholarship of teaching, and to demonstrate their commitment to professional development in teaching and life-long learning. It leads to a formal qualification in teaching at the tertiary level.

Staff with substantial teaching experience can negotiate with the convener to undertake a number of assignments and claim Advanced Standing for the first unit Introduction to Tertiary Teaching G (007597).

The GCHE explores approaches to teaching and learning, assessment and course design, with a focus on participants’ own teaching. It caters for tertiary teachers with varying levels of experience. There is a balance of theoretical and practical approaches to assist participants in the development of their professional practice through:

  • understanding of contemporary issues, knowledge and research related to learning and teaching in higher education
  • orientation to key aspects of policies, structures, procedures and practices relating to learning and teaching, with particular emphasis on the University of Canberra context
  • knowledge of the elements of contemporary good practice in tertiary teaching and critical reflection on the implications of these practices
  • knowledge of a wide repertoire of approaches and their application to course design, teaching and assessment in higher education
  • understanding approaches to monitoring and evaluation of teaching and the ongoing use of such approaches
  • increased skill in researching and communicating their professional practice and integrating scholarship, research and teaching.

Admission requirements

The minimum requirement is a Bachelor’s degree. Because participants in this course are expected to draw upon their own teaching experience and undertake investigations into their teaching practice, it is essential for participants to be concurrently engaged in some form of tertiary teaching
