Gown Hire

Gowns may now be hired in one of two ways:

1, Graduands may submit an online pre-payment for their gown hire here. All pre-payments must be finalised by 5pm, 23 March for the March 2012 ceremonies. Please print your invoice and present this invoice to the Registration desk on the day of your ceremony, at least one and a half hours prior to the commencement of your ceremony. On citing your invoice, you will be gowned accordingly.

2, Graduands may make hire payments on the day of their ceremony (one and a half hours prior to commencement), however CASH is the only method of payment that can be accepted. Please ensure you check in at the Registration desk at least one and a half hours prior to the commencement of your ceremony to make your gown hire purchase. On receipt of payment, you will be gowned accordingly.

Please note, if paying for your gown on the day of your ceremony, you must have CASH to pay for your gown hire.  Credit cards, debit cards and cheques are NOT accepted.

NB. Bonnets for PhD candidates are included in above prices.

Times for Gown Hire

Gown Return

Your deposit of $100 (which is included in your gown hire payment) will be refunded when you return your gown at the conclusion of the ceremony.  Gowns must be returned to the "Returns" desk in the Theatre foyer within one hour of the conclusion of the ceremony, together with the hiring slip.

Gown Purchase

Complete gown sets are available for purchase from the UCU shop on 02 6201 2170.  Please note that no orders can be accepted after 31 May for delivery in time for the September ceremonies or after 31 October for delivery in time for the March ceremonies.

These prices are GST inclusive. If full set is purchased a discount is applied.  Please note: if academic regalia is used in the course of employment it is tax deductible.

Academic Dress

Academic dress for the University consists of a black cloth academic gown, black mortar board and a black hood lined with silk. The colour of the hood lining distinguishes the level of award.

• Diploma - Black hood with turquoise blue lining
• Degree of Bachelor (3 and 3.5 years) - Black hood with red lining
• Degree of Bachelor (4 years) - Black hood with maroon lining
• Degree of Bachelor (5 and 6 years) - Black hood with pale grey lining
• Graduate Certificate or Diploma - Black hood with gold lining
• Degree of Master - Royal Blue hood with horizon lining
• Doctor of Philosophy - Royal Blue gown with gold facings, a black bonnet and a royal blue hood with horizon lining
• Doctor of the University -  Royal Blue gown with gold facings, a black bonnet and a royal blue hood with gold lining

Please note: Candidates who are being awarded a 'double' degree may only wear the hood lining colour for one of the single degrees being awarded.

If you are graduating from a Bachelor degree, it is customary to wear the tassel on the left hand side. If you have graduated previously and are graduating from a postgraduate degree, you can wear your tassel on the right hand side.
