Graduation

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The March 2012 graduation ceremonies will be held over 26-28 March, 2012.

Graduations are very important occasions, as they mark the culmination of many years of study. The Graduation team at the University of Canberra puts a lot of effort into ensuring the graduation ceremonies run smoothly. The Student Progress and Graduation Office coordinates the ceremonies, with the assistance of many people across the campus.

The ceremonies take place in the Great Hall at Parliament House. Several overseas presentation of award ceremonies take place every year for our students that study off-shore.

Do you intend to complete your course at the end of Semester 2, 2011?

If you intend to complete you course at the end of semester 2, 2011 and graduate in March 2012, you must ensure that your course completion date is set to END 2011 in MyUC by Friday, 7 October 2011. If you no longer have access to set your completion date to END 2011 by the deadline, you must contact the Student Progress and Graduation Office immediately to request to be included in the graduation round.

Invitations will be mailed out from mid-January 2012 - the response deadline for the March ceremonies is 17 February, 2012. Please email Student Progress & Graduation if you are unable to respond to the invitation on MyUC.

Subsumable and Double Degree students

Students wishing to graduate with a subsumable award or one part of a double degree need to notify the Student Progression and Graduation Office by sending an email to graduation@canberra.edu.au. You must also notify us if you have already taken out one part of a double degree and now need to take out the second part.

Cross Institutional Results

If you are relying on cross-institutional results to complete your course at the end of Semester 2, 2011 and graduate in March 2012, you must provide a certified copy of your official results from the external institution to the Student Centre by the 27th January 2012. Please notify the Student Progress and Graduation Office that you are completing your course and expecting to graduate in March when you submit the transcript.

If your external institution is not able to issue your official results in time to meet this deadline you may not be able to be included in the March's ceremonies. Therefore you will be invited to attend the next set of ceremonies scheduled for September 2012.

If you believe your external institution will be unable to meet this deadline you should email graduation@canberra.edu.au to advise us of other arrangements as soon as possible.

Deferring Graduation

For various reasons students sometimes prefer not to graduate in their allocated round. For example a student who is invited to attend a ceremony in March but whose parents are overseas, may prefer to graduate in the following March round of ceremonies.

In this situation the student must write to the Student Progress and Graduation Office stating reasons for the deferral request before the the RSVP date, 17 February, 2012.

If the request is granted the student will not graduate in the original round but will be 'held over' until the following round of ceremonies and will not receive their Testamur.

Please note that students who are invited to attend the March 2012 ceremonies and choose to defer, will not be conferred until September 2012. Students can not receive a testamur until they have officially graduated.

Important Changes to Graduation

Gown Hire update: Gowns hire may now be pre-paid at http://www.uclife.com.au/shop/graduation-hire/. Please note that Gown Hire prices have recently changed - please check the Gown Hire page for more information.

From 2010 Graduation ceremonies will no longer be held immediately after the end of Semester ie. July/December due to the restructure of the University's teaching periods. From 2011 Graduation ceremonies will be held in March and September. Students who complete their course at the end of Semester 1 2011 or Winter term 2011 will graduate in September 2011 and student who complete their course at the end of Semester 2, 2011 will graduate in March 2012.

For students who have been identified to graduate in March and whose results are released on the 16th of December, the Student Progress and Graduation Office will issue a letter of course completion, a complimentary academic transcript and invitation to attend a graduation ceremony to students in mid January 2012. Students whose semester results are not finalised by the official release of results date will receive their letter of course completion and academic transcript as soon as the Student Progress and Graduation Office confirms the course requirements have been met.

Testamurs can only be provided to students at the Graduation ceremonies for those students that choose to attend, or after the ceremonies for those students that choose to graduate in absentia. A letter of course completion and an academic transcript showing a student has completed the requirements of their course is normally sufficient evidence for applying for employment, permanent residency etc.

Questions, concerns or comments regarding these changes can be emailed to the Student Progress and Graduation Office.
