How are Your Fees Calculated?

Generally, tuition fees are calculated on a fee-per-unit basis. There are a number of factors that determine the fee that applies for a unit of study:

  • The annual fee rate for a particular course (please refer to the International Courses and Fees 2008 list);
  • The minimum credit requirement for course completion (Bachelor Degrees usually 72, Graduate Certificates usually 12 credit points; Graduate Diplomas usually 24 credit points; Master Degrees either 24, 36 or 48 credit points; Doctorates 72 credit points);
  • The duration of the course for a standard full-time student (Graduate Certificates 1 semester, Graduate Diplomas 2 semesters, Masters Degrees 3 or 4 semesters, Doctorate Degrees 8 semesters) and;
  • The credit points achieved by studying the unit. Most units carry a credit point rating of 3 or 4 points but some units have a much higher rating which indicates that they run over several semesters. For semester fees purposes, the credit point rating is averaged out across the relevant number of semesters.

All of the above factors are then used to calculate what is known as a student’s Equivalent Full-time Study Load (EFTSL). The EFTSL for a unit is calculated by multiplying the unit’s credit points and the course duration (in years), and then dividing by the minimum course credit points.

The fee for a unit is then calculated by multiplying together the unit load and the annual course fee.

Example: Bachelor of Information Technology $14,000 Minimum credit point required for completion: 72 credit points Standard full-time course duration (years): 3 years Unit: 3 credit point value

Unit Load = (3x3)/72 = 0.125 Unit Fee = 0.125 x $14,000

= $1,750 To calculate the total fee you will need to pay in a Semester simply multiply the appropriate cost per unit by the number of units you plan on undertaking. Study Plan: 4x3 credit points subjects Semester Fee = $1,750 x 4

=7,000

The same procedure applies for calculating the cost of each additional unit. Simply add the individual unit fees to determine a total. Important note: Some courses charge fees on a flat fee per unit basis. This means that units have a set fee and are not necessarily determined by the method detailed above.
