Enhancing Regional Participation in Higher Education
With support from a Structural Adjustment and Diversity Fund grant from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR), the University of Canberra is consulting with regional towns in the Capital Region (S-E NSW) to create new educational opportunities for people living in these communities. By engaging with local government, business, education and community groups in regional towns of between 2,500 and 21,000 residents, the project aims to enhance higher education access, participation and learning outcomes. The project supports both young and mature aged residents with a range of academic achievements, including those from low socio-economic backgrounds.
Project activities align with the University of Canberra's admission models, which guarantee entry and appropriate learning support to all prospective students. To support entry and achievement of regional students, a range of pilot programs has been developed with communities in six towns: Goulburn, Cooma, Jindabyne, Eden, Bega and Moruya.
These towns have high concentrations of age 15 -24 population cohort.
The project has enabled the University and regional communities to diversify course delivery through multiple tailored programs and to enhance learning experiences for regional students. Project activities will provide information on the benefits and costs of regional delivery.
