Migrant and Refugee Student Support Program

The Student Equity & Support Unit operates the Migrant and Refugee Student Support Program, which is targeted at newly commencing students on humanitarian visas and recently arrived domestic migrant students from non-English speaking countries. The program aims to increase students’ sense of belongingness, foster a sense of community, and assist with the retention and success of migrant and refugee students.

Migrant and Refugee Student Support at the University of Canberra

In an effort to provide the best possible university experience, the University of Canberra offers a selection of specialised programs and services to our Migrant & Refugee students.

Specialised Orientation Session

Attendance at this specialised orientation for newly commencing Migrant and Refugee students is highly recommended. It is an excellent way to meet valuable support staff, fellow students and to prepare for an exciting and rewarding academic experience at the University of Canberra.

Writing group for students from a non-English speaking background

In addition to the wide variety of academic services available to students at the Academic Skills Centre throughout the year, a specialised writing group is offered to assist students from non-English speaking backgrounds. Please visit the Academic Skills Program’s Workshops and Study Groups page for more information.

Migrant & Refugee Peer Mentoring Programme

To provide additional tuition for students thus ensuring the students have a better chance to successfully complete their studies. These additional tutorial sessions are conducted by Peer Mentors ideally from the same faculty. Students are able to receive personalised attention from their mentor on a weekly basis throughout the first semester of their studies.

In addition to the above, students are also encouraged to join the following:

  • Faceback weekly student social coffee and conversation club
  • The large support network within the University community.
  • The Migrant and Refugee Mentoring Moodle site to receive resources and support throughout your studies at UC
  • Do-It-Yourself (D.I.Y.) Canberra outings (based on student interest and request)
