Personal Adviser Scheme for International Students

The Student Equity & Support Unit operates the Personal Adviser Scheme, which is a support program for newly commencing undergraduate international students. All commencing undergraduate students are assigned an academic staff member from their home faculty as their Personal Adviser.

The Personal Adviser is the students “go-to” person for information and advice. Personal Advisers provide general academic and study skills advice, support and advice on administrative matters and pastoral support as appropriate - or referral to appropriate support services. Opportunities are provided for social networking with staff and students as part of the program.

All international students are also encouraged to seek advice and support as needed from the University’s dedicated International Students Advisers.

Harmony Program

The Student Equity & Support Unit operates the UC Harmony Program, which aims to promote, facilitate and celebrate equity and diversity at the University of Canberra.

A number of activities and events, including social networking opportunities such as the “Faceback” coffee club, occur throughout the year. The program also provides opportunities for UC students to have community development experiences on campus.

Rural Student Support Program

The Student Equity & Support Unit operates the Rural Student Support Program, which is a program for rural student commencers. The program aims to increase students’ sense of belongingness, foster a sense of community, and assist with the retention and success of rural students.

All newly commencing rural students are invited into the program, which consists of a specialised orientation program and the provision of a “buddy”. Groups of students are matched with their buddy who is a current student. The buddy provides the new students with advice and support on an informal basis. Students are invited to meet with their buddies at a coffee club for the first four weeks of semester. Students are then invited to join the Harmony Program “Faceback” coffee club meetings.

Migrant and Refugee Student Support Program

The Student Equity & Support Unit operates the Migrant and Refugee Student Support Program, which is targeted at newly commencing students on humanitarian visas and recently arrived domestic migrant students from non-English speaking countries. The program aims to increase students’ sense of belongingness, foster a sense of community, and assist with the retention and success of migrant and refugee students. Students are invited to a specialised orientation program and are provided with a peer mentor/tutor for one semester. The Academic Skills Program also provides a weekly writing group for the migrant and refugee students. Students are invited to join the Harmony Program “Faceback” coffee club meetings.

Elite Athlete Support Program

The Student Equity & Support Unit manages the Elite Athlete Support Program, which is for elite athletes and elite athletes’ coaches identified as such by the Australian Sports Commission. The University of Canberra is a member of the Elite Athlete Friendly University network.

Outreach Program

The Student Equity & Support Unit manages the Outreach Program, which aims to inspire people to consider the possibility of higher education. The program is particularly targeted towards individuals from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

The program is focussed on building aspirations and introducing individuals from equity groups to the opportunities provided by higher education. A number of “Student for a Day” programs are run for students from equity backgrounds.

Outstanding Scholars Program

The Outstanding Scholars Program is a program for high achieving (raw ATAR 95+) school leavers studying their first undergraduate course full-time. The Outstanding Scholars Program aims to inspire, support and encourage students and to provide them with the opportunity to be exposed to research activities in their field of study. Outstanding scholars receive

A subset of students in the program (raw ATAR 99+) also receives a second scholarship, the University of Canberra Commonwealth Supported Scholarship for Undergraduate Students, which is a HECS exemption scholarship. No application is required for the Outstanding Scholars Program.
