2011 SERAS Internship

SERAS interns from left Brennan McDonald, Bridgette Martin, Emma Friend and Joe Northey, 2011
“Since starting my SERAS internship I have been able to apply my skills and knowledge into the real world. Having been the recipient of the scholarship as an athlete and to now have an internship with SERAS it is testimony to the support SERAS has given me. Being able to apply and practice the skills I’ve gained over a wide variety of sports along with building relationships in the sporting community, it is a great benefit to my university studies and my future career prospects.”

International, Refugee and Migrant Scholarship
Hakim Makem and Dan Rowe, 2011
About Hakim
The International, Refugee and Migrant Scholarship has helped students like Hakim Morwel Marial Makem. Hakim is from Sudan and arrived in Australia in 2003. After settling in New Lambton in NSW he relocated to Canberra to commence a double degree in Social and Community Studies and Social Science in Justice Studies at the University of Canberra. Hakim has found the costs of living difficult and has been living out of his car for some time, he continued to be diligent in his studies while looking for a rental property.
‘I now have a roof over my head, I bought some books and I’m now in a position to find my own accommodation. All of the above would not have been possible with my Centrelink income of $400 a fortnight’ Hakim
Nelson Ojwiya and Dan Rowe, 2011
About Nelson
The International, Refugee and Migrant Scholarship has helped students like Nelson Ojwiya. Nelson arrived in Australia in 2009 from Uganda. He is studying a Bachelor’s Degree in Politics and International Relations. His family is still unemployed and coping with the challenges of resettling in Australia. In relocating to Canberra and beginning his studies university, Nelson simply did not have the necessary support. The scholarship helped relieve the pressure of Nelson’s situation with a small scholarship, allowing him to focus on the regular challenges of study. However, Nelson still struggles with the purchase of text books, a computer, accommodation and transport. This is the case for many facing similar challenges.
‘The most significant aspect of the Scholarship is that it will enable me to concentrate fully on my studies. As an undergraduate student from a refugee background, I am facing a lot of academic challenges which require dedication in terms of time and resources.’ Nelson
Dan Rowe and Gladys Kamale, 2011
About Gladys
The UC Foundation Scholarship Fund for Migrants and Refugees will make a difference to students such as Gladys Kamale.
Gladys is from Kenya and arrived in Australia in 2006. She lost her parents, has a brother still in Kenya and a younger brother who has just finished school living in Canberra. It has always been a dream of Gladys to become a nurse as she wants to help people. While in Kenya she volunteered at the General hospital assisting with children with cancer, and now she volunteers at an aged home in Canberra while studying. Now studying nursing at the University of Canberra, Gladys is working towards her dreams and goals.
‘The mentoring program really helps especially if English is not your first language.’
