Clare Holland Nursing Scholarship

Clare Holland

Clare began her nursing career in Sydney, training at the Mater Hospital and later working at St Vincent’s Hospital. After the establishment of the Woden Hospital she was invited by the Director of Nursing to work in Canberra, where she developed her passion for palliative care and community. To develop these passions she undertook a Community Nursing Diploma for which she won a scholarship. Since completing her diploma she worked in the field until she passed away from Breast Cancer in 1998. This work included volunteering in Vietnam in hazardous circumstances for which she was awarded the Humanitarian Overseas Service Medal by the Australian government.

Since her death a committee was established to remember her, keep her vision going, through the Clare Holland House hospice and awarding a scholarship to a nursing student with special interest in Oncology, Palliative Care or Community Nursing. The scholarship has run since 2001 and provides the recipient with a one off payment of $1,500.
