Graduate Research Office

Graduate Research Office

The University of Canberra is establishing a new Graduate Research Office to promote innovative, high-quality research training aligned with the University’s research strengths.

The nature of research training in Australia has changed considerably over the past decade. The policy and funding framework for research training is likely to change further in the next few years, in response to the Australian Government’s Research Workforce Strategy and the review of the Research Training Scheme.

The University of Canberra is also evolving rapidly. Our aim is to become an internationally recognised research-led institution, known for its high quality, high impact research in strategically selected areas. We are committed to perform in the top half of Australian universities on a suite of per capita research measures by 2018.

To help achieve this goal, and to begin to adapt to a new policy framework, the University is adopting a more strategic approach to research training. This will involve the introduction of new policies, new initiatives in supervisor training, new approaches to research training itself and a stronger focus on the quality of research training and the environment in which it is provided.

The new Graduate Research Office (GRO) will be responsible for coordinating all aspects of research training at the University of Canberra.

Faculties and Research Centres will still be responsible for selecting and admitting students, so prospective students should first contact the relevant faculty representatives.

The GRO will be focused on coordinating and developing the University’s research student education program, coordinate supervisor registration and training, develop pilot programs for innovative approaches to research training and update and monitor the University policies relating to research training.

The University will shortly appoint the inaugural Director of the Graduate Research Office, and the GRO itself will be up and running from January 2012.
