Probation
The Academic Progress Policy, found in Part 6 of the Gold Book, sets out University policy and practice relating to Academic Probation for candidates whose academic progress is not to an acceptable standard. Candidates are placed on probation after being identified as making unsatisfactory progress. This identification occurs in one of three ways: a candidate’s progress is assessed as unsatisfactory (overall assessment of 1 on the scale of 1 to 5) following an earlier assessment of unsatisfactory or marginally satisfactory (overall assessment of 2 on the scale of 1 to 5) progress; a candidate fails to comply with conditions required as part of an early intervention strategy or a candidate fails a Confirmation Seminar a second time.
Academic Probation is the imposing on a candidate a set of conditions for continuation in a course. These conditions are decided by the Chair of the candidate’s Supervisory Panel and approved by the Associate Dean of Research. These conditions are normally set for no longer than 6 months and reviewed upon a candidate completing a Special Progress Review. A candidate will be given a short timeframe to request the decision be reviewed if they believe the circumstances upon which it was made were incorrect.
