Exclusion
The Academic Progress Policy, found in Part 6 of the Gold Book, sets out University policy and practice relating to Exclusion. Candidates are excluded from a course after failing to satisfactorily meet the conditions imposed upon them by Academic Probation. This standard is decided by the Associate Dean Research (or delegate) of the Faculty or Director of the URC. Candidates can be excluded from the HDR course or counselled to transfer to a Masters by Research course if they are a PhD or Professional Doctorate candidate. Probation will only be extended if the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) is satisfied there existed exceptional circumstances beyond the candidates control.
Discontinuation from candidature is normally for the period of a year. Once this exclusion period has elapsed a candidate may reapply to that course through the standard application procedures. A candidate may also seek admission to a different course of study during the exclusion period. If however, the candidate has had a prior exclusion they will be excluded from all of the University’s courses for one year.

Review and Appeals
The Academic Progress Policy, found in Part 6 of the Gold Book, sets out University policy and practice relating to Review and Appeals. Candidates who have been excluded from a course may appeal the decision by providing a Statement of Reasons within a specified timeframe. This statement would detail exceptional circumstances which may have impacted on a candidate’s ability to achieve satisfactory progress.
The Statement of Reasons is referred to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) for decision on the candidate’s continuation in the course. The candidate is then informed of this decision. Any further appeals must then be made in accordance with the Student Grievance Resolution Policy.
The policy also outlines provisions for the University’s compliance for international students during this process.
