Supervision and Supervisors

The University recognises that quality supervision is fundamental to providing a high quality research experience and successful outcomes for candidates.

An applicant will only be admitted to a higher degree by research program if suitably qualified staff with expertise in the field of the proposed research are available to supervise in the relevant area of research.

To maintain and enhance the quality of postgraduate research education the University has a registration scheme for supervisors of research students. Criteria for supervisor registration are based on qualifications, research experience, and initial and continuing professional development for the supervisory role. Registration helps to ensure effective supervisory practice.

At UC, each candidate for a research degree is supervised by a supervisory panel that includes at least two qualified (registered) supervisors with advisers and other members as required. The chair of the supervisory panel takes on the role of primary supervisor. Supervisory panels for all candidates include a minimum of two registered supervisors.

Policy and practice regarding supervision are set out in supervision of Higher Degrees by Research Candidates Policy (the Gold Book). Information is provided on such matters as:

  • supervisory panels
  • appointment of supervisors
  • roles and responsibilities of supervisors and of candidates at each stage of candidature
  • registration of research supervisors
