The Research Training Scheme (RTS)

The Research Training Scheme (RTS) allocates Government funding to provide for the tuition fees of domestic students enrolled in a higher degree by research. The period of support provided by the RTS is a maximum of four years' full-time equivalent study for students undertaking a doctorate by research and two years' full-time equivalent study for students undertaking masters by research. Students who exceed their RTS entitlement but continue their enrolment will need to pay tuition fees unless other funds have been sourced to fund their enrolment.

FEE-HELP

FEE-HELP is a loan scheme that assists eligible fee paying students to pay their tuition fees. FEE-HELP can cover all or part of a student's tuition fees. There is no loan fee for FEE-HELP loans for postgraduate courses, including higher degree by research courses.

The Government pays the amount of a student's loan direct to the University of Canberra and students repay their loans through the taxation system once their repayment income is above the minimum repayment threshold for compulsory repayment.

Generally, you will be eligible for FEE-HELP for a unit of study if you:

  • Are undertaking study at an eligible higher education provider
  • Meet the citizenship or humanitarian permanent residency requirements
  • Are enrolled in an eligible unit of study on the Census date
  • Are not Commonwealth Supported in relation to that unit
  • Meet the Tax File Number (TFN) requirements
  • Have completed, signed and submitted a valid Request for FEE-HELP
  • Assistance form on or before the Census date and
  • Have not exceeded the FEE-HELP limit.

Australian citizens and holders of permanent humanitarian visas are generally entitled to apply for FEE-HELP assistance.

Non Award studies are not covered under the FEE-HELP system.

To request FEE-HELP assistance you are required to complete a Request for FEE-HELP Assistance form, available from the Research Students' Office. This form must be submitted to the University BEFORE the census date of the semester for which the student is requesting FEE-HELP.

For further information about FEE-HELP please visit the Research Students' Office to pick up an information booklet.
