Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS)
The Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS) is an academic initiative of the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) which aims to improve educational outcomes for Indigenous students by providing supplementary tuition. The Ngunnawal Indigenous Higher Education Centre receives DEEWR funding to cover the costs associated with employing tutors to provide one to one or small group tuition in subject specific areas.
Eligibility
To receive ITAS a student must:
- Be enrolled either full-time or part-time in a formal course (i.e. undergraduate degree), at the University of Canberra and registered through the Ngunnawal Centre.
- Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
- Be accepted as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander in the community in which he/she lives or has lived.
How to Apply
Registration forms are available from the ITAS Coordinator at the Centre and online in PDF format. As soon as an application has been lodged, an educational assessment also needs to occur. The ITAS Coordinator will organise an appointment for the student and a nominated Academic advisor employed within Ngunnawal Centre or the University, to establish the educational needs of the student. The ITAS Coordinator then matches a suitably qualified tutor within the field of the student(s) current studies.
ITAS Tutors
The Ngunnawal Centre maintains a register of tutors who are interested in providing paid tutoring (approximately $27 - $34 per hour for individual tuition - dependant on qualifications). There is also the opportunity for small group work. If you would like to register for possible future involvement with the scheme, please submit an ITAS Tutors Registration form (available here in PDF format) to the ITAS Coordinator. Hard copies of the paperwork are also available at the Ngunnawal Centre. There are additional forms required for our Human Resources section that are unavailable online so please drop into the centre.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tutors are particularly encouraged to apply. All current student applicants need to be at least two years ahead of the student they are tutoring and be able to creatively and sensitively provide effective tutoring to students. To be eligible to conduct tuition, tutors must be formally educated or have acquired relevant experience in the area of study in which the student is enrolled.
Tutors must be culturally aware, have empathy, an understanding of student needs and an awareness to address these needs. They will also have knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, an ability to relate to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and knowledge of issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
For more information please read the Tutor Guide (PDF format) and then contact the ITAS Coordinator via email or drop by the centre to obtain an information pack.
