Movie review: Daybreakers

Review: Daybreakers

By Sue Hryckiewicz

18 February 2010: This is a very different vampire story to the Bram Stoker Dracula rewrites. Set in the future with  advanced technology and after a plague turned a lot of the survivors into vampires.

This is an excellent example of why a vampire culture must be a social minority. Beautifully acted with some strong performances from Sam Neill and Ethan Hawke along with other cast members that you will no doubt recognise.

The music is a little heavy handed but quite suitable; the filming is excellent and plays a part along with the script to reveal and hide things from the audience, excellent editing.

Filmed in Australia, there are some lovely background settings when the characters get out of the city. Brilliant seamless graphics from WETA add to the intensity and different look and feel of the movie. The story concept is great, and the ending is quite unexpected and very satisfying.

Not for the squeamish, but not reserved for those who follow supernatural themes either.
