Josh Pyke at the University of Canberra refectory

By Michael de Percy

What a great night! This gig should have been outside on such a perfect evening. A freak cash injection saw us with tickets at the door for only $35 and we were stoked to see Ashleigh Mannix as the support act. I first saw Ashleigh on the concourse at the University of Canberra a couple of years ago (her dad works at UC) and then saw her perform on Stage 88 just before Something for Kate and Alex Lloyd. Wow - has this young star got it all or what? Ashleigh has a vocal capacity that defies her stature - the longest sustained human utterance I have ever heard - and the most awesome voice that would make Ricky Lee Jones envious. Much to my disgust, the crowd chattered throughout most of the performance and a crappy lead didn't do Ashleigh justice - but watch this space because nothing will hold this kid back once she masters crowd control!

Josh Pyke was the star attraction and the intimate setting was perfect for his interactive style. I am still not sure if this was intentional or not, but the interaction was nothing short of brilliant. The first word that springs to mind is 'honest' - and this guy is honest! Josh obviously enjoyed the gig as his banter with the crowd showed that not only is he a poet and guitarist, but a real entertainer. It is rare for artists to have it all but his style reminds me of the great Jon English in his ability to move the crowd. If you ever saw 'Pirates' you will know what I mean - even the grumpiest person cannot help but smile and join in the hand-clapping and toe tapping once English gets going! Josh modernises the approach with a quality that reminds me of the feeling you get when saying goodbye to your mates as mum calls you for dinner and the sun sets over the suburbs - you can't help but like him. Indeed, by the end of the gig you feel like you have known him all your life!

The venue was OK but it really needs updating - it has that tired old institutional feel about it and sitting on the sticky floor just "ain't my thang". But the UCU Bar was pumping as we were leaving (it was Ressies' Bar Night) and the campus is obviously buzzing like it hasn't for a long time now. Nevertheless, the highlight of the evening for me was the finale - 'Middle of the Hill'. There were at least three new songs that Josh assured us were his first ever live performances. I'm not sure if this is true or not but he had me convinced anyway! Josh Pyke will be taking a break for the next few months to record his second album and by the sounds of things, it will be another winner. Keep your eye out for more happenings at the University of Canberra - PNAU in April plus many other great acts to get you through semester one!
