Dr Nicoll's research interests complement his appointment to CAMAC |
31 July 2008: A University of Canberra law lecturer has been appointed to the committee responsible for advising the federal government on corporate law reform, financial services and markets.
Acting director of the University’s National Centre for Corporate Law and Policy Research Geoffrey Nicoll, who is known for his research in corporate law, corporate finance and public sector governance, has been appointed to Companies and Markets Advisory Committee (CAMAC). He also holds long standing interests in the law and governance of superannuation and investment funds.
Dr Nicoll, an executive member of the Business Law Section of the Law Council of Australia since 2000, says the two-and-a-half-year appointment is a valuable thing for the university.
“My appointment seems sure to greatly enrich both the national and international agendas of the Research Centre and the Faculty’s established teaching programs in corporate and commercial law,” he said.
“Since my own research interests are closely aligned with the CAMAC agenda, this appointment will certainly encourage me to carry forward my past research on two ARC-funded Grants.”
CAMAC is a Commonwealth Authority established under the Australian Securities and Investments Commission Act 2001 to advise on matters relating to the amendment, administration or reform of the Corporations Act, the financial products and services industry, or proposals to improve the efficiency of financial markets. Appointments are made by the Minister for Corporate Law, Senator Nick Sherry.
According to the minister, these appointments and reappointments continue the high level of skills and experience available to the main committee and the subcommittee of CAMAC, ensuring that both committees have appropriately qualified members to deal with the differing issues which arise.
