UC staff enjoy work-health program

Graham Robinson

09 May:University of Canberra staff have been enjoying the opportunity to undertake an exercise program during working hours.

University of Canberra staff members under the guidance of qualified personal trainers, Be Mohr and Emily Stewart-Reed have commenced a six week exercise program designed to kick-start health options for university staff.

Ms Mohr said following an approach from the University human resources department she decided to implement the program and has been amazed at the level of interest.

Ms Mohr said the exercise program is a great way to develop a work-health balance and can lead to happier and healthier staff, which in turn can lead to an increased satisfaction in the working environment, which also improves an employee’s efficiency.

She said, “It’s important that staff feel good about their work environment. Many people spend a long time behind their desks and do very little movement.

“The exercise program has been well received by all involved and the motivation is high with everyone enjoying the fact that they are outside and participating in a tailored exercise program.”

A very competitive nature is also being developed between those participating and spirits are high with many suggesting that they are now sleeping better and feeling good after just one week of the exercise program.

Alison Watson was one of the first to sign up to the program and is already reaping the benefits. “It has given me more energy, and I am having fun with a lot of laughs,” she said.

The only male taking part during the day time sessions Nicholas Papadatos, says he is enjoying the exercise and finding it much easier now following the first session. “I found muscles I forgot I had. I feel like a new person now, and intend to continue the exercise program after the six weeks is over,” he said.
