Students ease newcomers into tutorial life

6 March 2007: Tutorials won't be a daunting experience for this semester's new students after their more experienced colleagues gave them the inside information.
Knowing many students have no idea about how to prepare or what to expect, the Golden Key Society decided to ease this year's new students into the experience of tutorials by running the Succeeding through tutorials program during O-week.

Society member and web-designer Karen Woods said Golden Key was approached by the Academic Skills Program to run the tutorial sessions from a student's perspective.
“The content of the workshops represents what students have found important to pass onto others to help them prepare for university level classes,” Ms Woods said.
“We wanted to show that tutorials are vastly different from lectures and that the focus at university is on independent learning.”
Ms Woods said the response to the sessions was fantastic and numbers far exceeded expectations.
“We expected around 45 students each day but were faced with more than 120,” Ms Woods said.
“After each workshop we were approached by several students thanking us for such a useful and informative session.”
Ms Woods said Golden Key would love to be involved in running the program again next year.
