6 March 2013: Local indie-rock band Lavers will launch their new single, ‘I’ve Been Waiting For You’, at Transit Bar next month.
Vocalist and guitarist, Dominic Lavers, who is a University of Canberra graduate, will launch the first single from the band’s forthcoming debut album alongside brother and pianist Sebastian Lavers and drummer Matt Barnes.
Mr Lavers said the new single will reflect the band’s varied sound.
“We like to keep things interesting for us and our audience. Our musical style can be a bit of a rollercoaster,” he said.
The band has played alongside Julia Stone, Crooked Saint, Owen Campbell, Nantes and Ashleigh Mannix.
“We’ve been growing and growing with every gig we play. We’ve had a lot of little victories along the way and we just want to keep the ball rolling,” he said.
The band’s song, ‘Tangled Up In Dreams’, was a top three finalist at the MusicACT Annual Music Awards in the ‘Song of the Year’ category for 2012.

“It was really good to see people come along and enjoy themselves and great to see the new bar. We love coming to UC and I have great memories of it—some of the best times of my life happened at UC,” he said.
Mr Lavers graduated with a Bachelor of Journalism in 2010, which he describes as his ‘back up plan’ while he focuses on his music.
“I had these delusions of grandeur, of becoming a rock star journalist in the music world. I needed a fallback plan but I always think big.”
The band started in the Lavers family basement.
“My brother used to play the guitar and piano downstairs in the basement and I had a recorder for my journalism course so I’d secretly record him and write some words to the music,” he said.

Matt Barnes surprised the pair by joining them during a performance at the University and ended up staying on as a member of the band.
“We met him when we played at UC once and didn’t have a drummer. He didn’t know any of the songs but he jumped on stage with a cajon drum and just started playing. We’re really lucky to have him on board, he has a great technical understanding of music and is a great singer too.”
Mr Lavers’ advice to others trying to enter the music industry is to dream big and perform well.
“It doesn’t matter if five people come to watch or 70,000. Always put on your best performance because in that moment those people are the only ones that matter. The people who come to watch you and support live music, they’re the special ones,” Mr Lavers said.
